What is Swish?
An exciting and dynamic category of dental services is transforming how dentists proactively and precisely prevent, detect, and treat severe gum disease or periodontitis. These diagnostic services are known as “salivary testing.” As the name suggests, a simple swish provides valuable insights into the health of your gums and the oral microbiome. Since the health of the gums and mouth is so linked to conditions that affect the whole body, we can even assess for the risks of potential systemic diseases.
So, how does it work?
Swish is a non-invasive test that provides our patients with accurate information to target the underlying causes of bleeding, inflammation, and other signs of periodontal disease. We take a small sample of your saliva, which is then analyzed. There are specific biomarkers or indicators of oral health in the saliva. These indicators provide a window into your oral health. We can specifically evaluate the balance of bacteria and other microorganisms naturally found in the mouth. Any imbalances in your oral microbiome increase your risk of developing gum disease, tooth decay, dry mouth, and even systemic conditions like cardiovascular disease.
How do you use saliva testing?
Swish supports our ability to provide truly personalized medicine. Drs Matt and Bryan can identify specific bacteria and then target them with interventions that have been proven to address those unique bacterial risks effectively. By proactively and effortlessly incorporating Swish into regular checkups at our office in Bryn Mawr, PA, we can detect potential trouble signs early on and intervene with them before conditions arise, progress, and cause symptoms and damage. For those with existing diseases, Swish may be used to record our progress on targeted treatments. We can see how well these treatments may be working to restore a healthy microbiome and may then adjust interventions accordingly based on what we find following analysis.
